RAN

To the Watershed, Bristol yesterday evening for a rare showing of RAN, the Kurosawa epic for which Emi Wada won a well-deserved an Academy Award for Costume Design.  The plot is loosely adapted from Shakespeare’s Lear with elements of Macbeth – which Kurosawa had already attempted in Kumonosu-Djo – added for good measure.

However for the first 3/4 hour (and much of the rest of the film) it is the costumes which steal the show, for me.

The film has been reissued  with an upgraded print.  I may use this as a basis for some characters for my shadow theatre, especially thinking of printing the costumes OR having a printed sheet showing the colours of each character.
